PEAK OF UNEMPLOYMENT NOW PASSED IN DOMINION MINISTER HOPEFUL
Wellingaon, Thursday. The Unemployment Board's report indicates that the highest level of unemployment in New Zealand has been passed. Hon. Adam Hamilton predicts that if no new factor arrests the rising tendency in national income, any change in unemployment will now be for the better. The financial burden of unemployment is fully and frankly discussed in the report, which shows that the total cost to the State since 1926-27 approximates £12,000,000. Detailed statistics trace the mounting growth of expenditure, commencing with a total of £144.240 in 1926-27 and reaching £4,097,833 last year. In 1926-27 State funds were provided only through the Public Works Departnient (£130,000) and State Forest Service (£14,240). In the following years subsidies to local bodies came' into operation, and they reached a peak of £166,767, in 1930-31, after which the Unemployment Fund became the principle means of expediture. Local body subsidies . last year dropped to £216 and the Public Works Fund, which had expended £1,249,000 in 1930-31, contributed £397,632. The Unemployment Fund was drawn upon to the extent of £3,687, 897. .
