HAWERA FIRE

OUTBREAK IN DRAPER'S SHOP QUICKLY QUELLED Hawera, Monday. Smart work by the Hawera Fire Brigade on Saturday night quelled a fire which was starting on the premises of Mx\ J. M. Westaway, drapex\ and threatened a large block of wooden buildings in High Street. A small amount of damage was done. The call was given from a street box shortly after 9.15 a.m. and when the brigade arrived the middle room on the first floor was well alight. A lead of water was concentrated on the spot and the fire was quickly 'subdued. Stock in Cut Rate Providers, Ltd., and Mr. Westaway's shop was somewhat damaged. The cause of the outbreak is not known as the room was a spare room and contained neither gas nor electricity. It is stated that the last person to be in the room left it at 5 p.m. on Saturday. There was no stock in the room, but mereiy disused boxes.
