-By Telegraph— Copyright).

Auckland, Saturday. In order to ascertain the number of men eligible for country work, , who can be sent to various camps without inflicting hardship on themselyes or families the Laboui' Department is carrying out a general stock-takmg m various Auckland districts where relief labour is employed. The men are called up for medical examination in the first place and af they are found to be fit for country work they are asked to giye reasons why they should not be drafted to thb country. If there are _ satisfactory reasons they will be retained in the city or suburbs, but if not they will . be drafted to the country. A Labour official said to-day that large numbers of men were required at present in the country for ragwort eradication. County councils had found that insufficient men were available in their areas and they were applying to the city almost daily, he said." This was an important national work and every man who could be sent to the country was needed. Preparatory work for the Government's small farm scheme and ordinary seasonal work were also increasing the demand for labour, he added.
