“A MORGUE”

ROTORUA TOWN LACK OF ATTRACTIONS DURING LABOUR WEEK-END ORGANISER NEEDED "I heard one man say, 'well, I am disappointed in this illuminated morgue'," said Mr. L. Ewert at last night's meeting of the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce and Retailers' Association, when expressing the opinion that something more should have been done to entertain the • large crowd of visitors in the town over the Labour Day week-end.- He had ■ spoken to a number of these visitors and had found that they were very disappointed at the lack of attractions. „ He thought that something more ouglit to be done to make visitors enjoy their stay. Mr. J. McDowell said that this was realJy the first long week-end in which attractions had not been arranged by the Advancement Committee. The members of this committee gave a great deal" of their time to promoting attractions of this nature. but a handful of men could not g-o on indefinitely shouldering all this work. In his opinion an organisef should be appointed to undertake matters of this description for there was a limit to the amount of voluntary work that could be undertaken. -Mr. E. G. "Guy supported these views. In his opinion the time had passed when voluntavy helpers should be expected to do everything*. Businessmen could not leave their work during busy periods to run cqvnivals and so oni - Rotorua was losing business through not having an organiser to sell its attractions. • In his opinion a competent man should be employed to undertake this work — his . salary would be more than returned in the additional turnover. He thought it was a mistaken idea that- attractions should always be proviaed free — visitors were like anyone else, they were prepared to pay to be entertained. He felt that it was vital that steps^ should be taken to co-ordinate activities and improve the attractions of the town for visitors. ' General support was expressed for these views and the diseussion lapsed. -
