EARLY ROTORUA
CLIPPINGS FROM "THE CHRONICLE." June 12, 1897. — Last Monday rnorning about 12.30 a.m. Mr. T. Samson's store in Fenton Street, next door to the Grand Iiotel, was totally bumed.' A strong wind was blowing from the south-west. Had it been from the opposite quarter the Grand Hotel would inevitably have gone. The insurances are: — iP-hoenix, £300 on th'e buildings, £150 on the stock, and £75 on the fittings. United, £200 on the stock. The cause of the fire has not been ascertained. Th'e proprietor's brother was sleeping on the premises, and was only awakened by the roar of the flames. He states that he went to bed about 11 o'clock, leaving a fire burning in a register grate in the front room; and a coat in front to dry. About an hour after he heard something falling on the floor and, getting out of bed discovered' the front room on fire. Very little pro-perty in the main building was saved but that in the outhouses consisting of kerosene, saddles, bags of chaff, potatoes, brain, maize and a- variety of other goods were got out safely.
