BRAVE DOCTOR
The North Walbottle M&ners' Lodge has sent a letter of appreciation to Dr. H. Kendall for his heroism. in saving the life of Richard Foley, aged 17, a miner wh'o was bleeding to death down a mine. Foley was working on a conveyor -in NTorth Walbottle pit when a stone, weighing 60 tons, fell and pinned his hand to the top of a "tuh." The frail tub, hearing the full weight of the stone, was 18in from the floor and Foley was trapped in this space. Dr. Kendall, who is 5-7, wriggled up to the young miner. Lying on his side he administered ch'loroform, and, though faced with the risk that at any moment he mlght be crushed to death by the tub yielding to the great weight resting upon it, he aniputated the lad's three fingers to procure his release.
