KUIRAU STEAM

NEW ARRANGEMENT THERMAL WATER TO BE DIVERTED BY DRAIN INDICATION TO COUNCIL An indication that there were now prospects of alleviating the steam nuisance from the Kuirau Reserve was given by the mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) at Wednesday night's meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council. It was originally decided to endeavour to break the rising Steam by erecting a f acine fence of brush on the boundary oi' the reserve, but it has now been decided to drop this proposal and endeavour to divert the thermal water by means of a drain. Previously objections to this course had been raised by the natives residing in the vicinity as they contended that this would deprive them of the thermal water which they used for cooking and washing purposes. However, the mayor reported that these difficulties now appeared likely to be satisfactorily surmounted. The Works Committee's recommendation in connection with the matter was as follows : — • . (a) That the work on the facme fence on Lake Road should not be proceeded with at present, but that application should he made to the Tourist Department for the right to construct a drain from their reserve to connect with the drainage scheme of the Kuirau Domain; (b) that the council should write to the Tourist Department asking for the right to construct washing facilities for the Maoris on the north-west corner of the Kuirau Reserve adjacent to Lake Road and request the department to supply the necessary length of 3ft or 4in.'galvanised iron pipe to carry the hot water from the Kuirau pool to the proposed washing plaee,_ the pipes to be laid by the council on the Kuirau Reserve. In this connection, the district manager of the Tourist Department also wrote to the council stating that it wouM be necessary for the borough engineer and the department s overseer to confer in regard to the matter.
