ROTORUA BOROUGH

COUNCIL MEETING REPORT S OF COMMITTEES AND CORRESPONDENCE DEALT WITH ROUTINE BUSINESS Theregular meeting of the Rotorua Council was held on Wediiesday night. There were present, His W orship the Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson), Councillors E. T. Johnson, O. H. Ooleman, F. Goodson, G. H. French, L. W'oolliams, J. Banks, G. Piteele. A letter was received from the district manager of the Tourist Department with reference to the formation of the batter on Rangiuru Street whcre it flanks Pukeroa, Reserve and advising that he had recommended to his department that the work proceed on the foliowing conditions: (1) That the council in making the batter on Pukeroa ReseTve, shall .undertake to fully maintain same. (2) That the borough will erect a four-wire fence, with the necessary transverse fences, the fence to he six feet from the top of the fbatter, the dv.partment to undertake ihe inaintenance of these fences. (3) Drainage: The council to cut and miainiain a storm-water drain, and take such other steps as may he necessary to prev*.nt st'orm[water from flowing over the face oi bhe batter. ( i) The expenditure on the reserve of any monies Ly the borough council shall give the council 'no right of any kind whatsoever, over the land, within the present ilegal boundary of the reserve. (5) The borough council to undertake to plant suitaible plants to hide (the face of the batter. (6) No work to he carried on iniside the boundary of the medical Officer's residence, without the fuil lagreement of the department. It was decided to sign a draft agreemem mcorporating these condixions but with a provision making it plain that the council in no way prejudiced its claim to Pukeroa Reserve. Lialte Bath House The secretary of the Ohinemutu and Tarewa Komiti Marae forwarded the foliowing resolution carried at the last meeting of the komiti: "That this meeting' of the Ohinemutu and Tarewa Komiti Marae protest against the proposal to remove the Lake House Bath-house ■to a posicion abutting on to Tunu,hopu Street, and emphatically exrpress its opinion that the building' if removed from its present site •should not be erected within 30 feet of the said road." The mayor expressed the opinion that the oibjection was rightly raisetl and was in accordance with townplanning principles. It was decided to stipulate that the building must not be erected closer than 20 feet from the roadway. With reference to the reeent discussion regarding ply .ng-f or-hire licenses in the town, the Rotorua Bus Coy. advised that it had now made application f or a continuous passenge.service license from Brents Bathgata House. /The secretary, Municipal Association of New Zealand advised that the next conference of delegate? would ibe held in Wiellington during March, 1934. He asked that remits should be forwarded not later tnan Novcmlber 30 next. General Committee The General Committee advised that it had received communications from the Rotorua Motor Transport Co., Ltd., and the Rotorua Bus Co., Ltd., -with reference to plying-for-hire licenses and had advised these companies that >plying-for-h:re licenses must be taken out, otherwise further •action would be taken. The committee had fully investigated the poisition .with regard to the bus stano. and had endeavoured to ascertain the wishes of the operatcrs of the various sightseeing trips as to th2 desirability of a public stand for sight-s^emg vehicles being provided. From the replies recfcived^lhe ccmmittee was of opinion -iat the original decision of the council should be adhered to, that is, that the Rotorua Bus Co. should be permitted to eland vehicles on the Hinemoa Street stand adjaccnt to the Bank of New Zealand, half an hour ohly hefore trips. The report was adopted. Drainage Committee The Drainage 'Committee recommended that with reference to the letter from Mrs. Mitten received at the previous meeting of the council, she is advised that at the meeumg referred to m ner letter, His Worship the Mayor, in reply to a question, sta'i^ed that communal convoniencefc would he provided. at Whaka; that it was originally intended to m-ovide 12 groups but on the matter ibeing further invesiigai cd it was found more satisfactoi v co provide a larger number; that some of the natives who have had individual conveniences erected are pay'ng the cust of same and that the INativc D'epartment is contributing towards the cust of the installation of the sewerage in the pa. The committee also recommended that notice be served cn Mr. Levuka Corbett, the owner of two houseS in Fenton Street and three houses in Toko .Street, calling on bim to carry out necessary work wuthin twentyone da.ys, failing compliance with which that application ihe made to the Health Department for the issue of a closing order. The reeommendations wer,e adopted. The Drainage Committee also reported that it had authonsed Messrs €. A. Clarke and Son to connect the discharge from their hottle washing machine to the storm-water pipe in Tutanekai Street, but only if they could not get their discharge into. the storm-water channel. The committee was agreed that if the water could be diseharged into the waterttahle, it would be preferable to have it done this way raxher than having •t0 make a connection to the pipe. Works Committee The Works Committee recommended that the council apply to the P. and T. Department and the Tourist Department to have the two poleS at the intersection of Fenton Street and Wairoa Road removed, This will

cost the council approximately £20, being half the cost. The committee •was of opinion that the moving of these poies would not only facilitate entrance to Mr. Iles' section but would improve the corner for general traf- " fic purposes. The recommendation was ladopted. The committee also reported having received advice that the Main Hig.hways Board is contemplating the widening of Lake Road Highway near the Utuhina Stream Bridge and having made application to the Tourist Denartment for the right to remove approximately 100 yards of soil fromi the north-west corner of Pukeroa Reserve adjacent to Lake House. The members of Ngati Whakaue had be^n notified that the application had been made. With reference to the recent petition from residents of Pererika Street regarding refuse removal, the Works Committee recommended that a circular should he prepared and sent to all house-holders in the area pointing out that the rates had been struck for this year and could not be varled, and advising them that the cart called round every Thursday morning. The committee reported that it had approved of the footpath in Fenton - -Street from Froude Street to Amohau Street ibeing put into order and the grass margins trimmed. It had also made application to the A.A.A. for the erection of Mbtor Canip signs on Fenton Street at thj interesection of Wlylie Street and Sophia Street. Advancement Committee The Advancement Committee recommended that application be made to the Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs for permission to conduct an art union .in connection with the Queen Carnival; the total prize money to be £25; the tickets to sell at 6d eaich; the Art Union to close on December 30 and to drawn on January 9, 1934. The committee reported that in order to assist in making Carnival Week more attraetive, it was proposed to run a Queen Carnival and that the committee recommended that the prcceeds of the Queen Carnival and Art Union should be divided between the comimittee and the Women's Club on a percentage of 50 per cent. A small sub-committee had been set up to work with representa.tives of the Women's Club in starting the Art Union and controlling same during ithe Queen Carnival. The programme for Carnival Week was well in hand. Ona or two slight alterations had had to he made but the programme generally was the same as previously submitted to the council. Two thousand copies of a small map of the borough with advertising matter on the back thereof had been ordered. These maps would he sold in quantities where so required at 5/per gross, otherwise they would. be given .away for advertising purposes. (In order to make the procession more attraetive, the committee was clbtaining quotations fcr the supply of 100 or 200 chinese lanterns. In order to assist the Town Clerk as organiser for carnival week the comimittee had decided tO' appoint an assistant for three weeks, two weeks prior to the carnival and during carnival week, at a salary of £5 per week. The resignation of Mr. R. H. Reid a.nd been accepted with regret, appreeiation of his enthusiastic and willing service during the tirne he had been connected with the committee, had been placed on record. The report was adopted.
