SHOP HOLIDAYS
SUGGESTION THAT ROTORUA SHOULD HAYE SPECIAL EXEMPTION CONVENIENCE OF VISITORS. A suggestion that special legisla'tion should be given Rotorua t0 enable shops to remain opcn on certain statutory holidays was made by Cr. 0. H. Coleman at la-st evening's meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council. 'Cr. Goleman said that he had heard many com.plaints from, visitors regarding the fact that the town was always closed up at the time when visitors were here. Thiey had had an examiple of this during the recent j Labour Day week-end when al'l shops had been closed on Monday, a large number on Tuesday and a further ' : umber on Wednesday afternoon. In j the same way shops were closed at Uhristmas, New Year and at Easter when large numbers of visitors were in town. Shopkeepers closed not because they wanted to, but because they were compelled to do so by sta- ! tute. There was ,also the question of ; overlapping awards. He suggested, | however, that the time had arrived ! when Rotorua should seek special j 1 jgislation granting it exemption from j various of these statutory provisions i and enabling shops to remain open for the convenience of visitors. Cr. G. H. French strongly support- ; ed Cr. Coleman and stated that he had held -similar views for very many ' years. 1 The suggestion was referred to the ' Advancement Committee for consid- ! eration.
