PROSPECTS FAVOURABLE

(Rec. 12.29 a.m.) Canberra, October 25 Mr. Schmitt, the New Zealand Trade Gommissioner was present in the Federal House when the New Zealand-Australian Trade Agreement was tabled. Interviewed he said: The agreement would enlarge the bonds of friendship between New Zealand and Australia. He hoped that a more favourable trade balance would* result for New Zealand. Judging from co'mments he had heard among Ministers and members the agreement should make for greater stability between the two countries. He pointed out that for tbe two years 1931-32 the export' of Australian goods to New Zealand had been worth £5,119,000 and the imports of New Zealand goods by Australia £2,185,000. Thus in two years Australia bad enjoyed 72 per cent. and New Zealand 28 per cent. of the trans-Tasman trade.
