DEAD AND INJURED
TRAPPED TOGETHER Paris, October 24 Those recovered were confined in the first two coaches, whare the dead ■ and dying were thrown in a confused I heap and extrication was •almost im- ■ possible, owing 'to the necessity for i preventing the telescoped coaches plunging into the riverbed. Aeroplanes, a detachment of the Chasseur Regiment and diver-s from Rouen assisted in the rescues. Some were lowered wdth ropes round their waists and risked drowning. They hauled Senator Dndouit and others from the river when at the point of death. Many tore sleepers from the track, ibattered in the sidos of the coaches, and made rough stretchers of pailings. A young soldier, on extricating a body, found it was his sister. Up and down the lines were blockled by wreckage, and for hours fhe broken telegraph lines impeded communication. A Horrible Nightmare Another soldier described a nighttmare of horror when the violent braking awoke him from a doze as fhe carriage skidded sideways on the i twisted rails and stopped short. A : gaping hole appeared in the parapet : through which the forepart of the , .train plunged. Ile and a sailor com[panion devoted themselves to caring for an old woman in the sarne com■partment. ; The police discount the theory of foul play and ascribe the accident to applying brakes too suddenly at 65 miles hourly.
