THE RED FLAG
(Press Assn.—
sung by sailors MEN ON DIOMEDE RESENT CURTAILMENT OF LEAVE TROUBLE AT CHRISTCHURCH
-By Telegraph — Copyright).
Christchurch, Tuesday. Trouble occurred with some of the crew of H.M.S. Diomede at Lyttelton on Monday afternoon and a demonstration was made in the course of which the Red Flag was sung. The demonstrators were all New Zealand ratings. It is alleged that the grievance was the general all round tightening-up of conditions and the curtailment of extra shore leave which the men expected on Labour Day. The men due for leave expected to get away from the ship about one o'clock but when no parade of the liberty men was called, thes'" commenced a mild demonstration. No significance is attached to the singing of the Red Flag which was merely an expression of disapproval at the loss of shore leave. The men were eventually given leave at 3 p.m. The personnel of the Diomede is composed partly of Imperial and partly of New Zealand ratings. To-day the New Zealand ratings were paraded before Captain Cosmo-Graham, who addressed them explaining why leave had been reduced. To a representative of the press the captain later described the affair as "trivlal" stating that hundreds of visitors were admitted to the ship immediately afterwards.
