EXCITING SITTING
SOCIALISTS RELUCTANT (Rec. 7.10 p.m.) Paris, October 24 The Daladier Government was defeated by 329 votes to 241 on an amendment proposed by the Radical Deputy, M. Lassalles. The debate was marked by tense excitement, deputies 1 realising that not only was the de- | feat of the Government involved but | also the break-up of the Left and the l splitting of the Socialist Party which was an historic event. After the |Chamber adjourned, Ministers drove to the Champs Elysecs to hand in their resignations to the President who begins consultations later in the day. The amendment on which the Government was defeated sought to attract support from the Socialists by calling u]ion the Government to reduce lower salaries less and higlier salaries nioro. M. Daladier announced that he would accept the amendment as a confidence issue. The Socialist leader, M. Blum, speaking under stress of emotion, explained why it was that the Socialists felt themselves obliged to vote against the Government on the salary reduction issue though they "hated to do so." A heated dialogue followed between M. Daladier and M. Blum after which the division was taken.
