TOO LOW
AEROPLANES AMONG THE MASTERTON RESIDENTS COMPLAINTS TO COUNCIL Masterton, Thursday.' Complaints regarding the noise made by aeroplanes circling low over Masterton, particularly in the early hours of the morning, were made at a meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last evening. The matter was raised by Councillor Trevor Beeham, who said he had received complaints from residents about an aeroplane flying low over houses shortly after 6.30 a.m. last Sunday. He did not know whether any action could be taken in the matter, but thought that residents might have a grievance at being disturbed at an early hour on a Sunday morning. The mayor (Mr. T. Jordan) : It is contrary to the Act. Councillor Beeham said he had been informed that the machine in question was privately owned and that the Wairarapa Aero Club had no control over it. Mr. Jordan, with a smile:,I would not find too much fault with men flying and learning flying just now. Councillor Beethm: I quite agree with you. Their services may be needed at any time.
j There was, however, added Mr. Beeham, plenty of open country between Masterton and Martinborough over which machines might fly without concentrating on residential quarters. Councillor W. L. Free, who is also president of the Aero Club, pointed out that the police had control over the air as well as the ground, and that they had power to take*ai|y action deemed necessary. The Aero Club had no jurisdiction over pri-vately-owned machines. "Unless they are deemed to be creating a public nuisance," observed Mr. Jordan, "I don't see that any action can be taken. But," he added, "we do not want to do anything to discourage these chaps. In fact, the more we can encourage them the better, I say." Councillor Beetham: Exactly. The more the merrier. The matter was dropped.
