WORLD PEACE DEMANDS A THOROU GHLY GENUINE ' CONVENTION
CHECKED BUT NOT DISMAYED
Ihere lappears to be a general feeling in Britain and France that there should be no abandonment of the Disarmament Conference. It is considered vital that the powiers should strive ,to produce a genuine convention. Germany's action is not underestimiated but it has prompted no precipitate movemejxt.
Rugby, Oetober 17. Brief reference was made to Germany's action by Mr. Neville Cham-bex-lain (Chancellor of the Exchequex*), in a speech at Nottingh'am last night. He said: "The British Government ha,d made a great effort to restore that confidenee to which nothing* could have contributed more powerfully than the adoption of a disarmament convention such as was proposed reeently by the British Foreign Secretary at Geneva,. We must, therefore, deeply regret the precipitate and ill-judged action of the German Government, because the proposals made hy Sir John Simon whieh had received general support, not only of France but also of the United States and Italy, were specifically designed t0 give Germany complete equality of treatment within a reasonahle period. "The situation requires the calmest and most deliberate consideration, and all would do well to refrain from hasty comment and from alarmist speculation." No Re-armament Mr. George Lansbury, Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition, in a speech urged that the British Government should take the lead in demanding general disarmament. He said: "We who belong to the peace movenient cannot for a moment consent to the re-armament of Germany. On this question there ought to be not the silghtest division of opinion among any of us."
