STILL GOING STRONG
OLD MACHINE IN CLARKE'S * FACTORY FROM TAURANGA Reprinting from its pages of 50 years "ago the Bay of Plenty Times recalls an early business development by the following paragraph: ^ "Mr. C. A. Clarke's soda water machine is now in full working ordeiy and the proprietor has shown his sense in procuring a first-class machine. Many people imagine that •this machine is too large for such a community as Tauranga, but that is a very sinyple mistake to fall into. The secret of success in the application of mechanical work is found in employing the very best that can be had. The only misfortune is that here is a machine requiring the water power, and for the present hand labour must be employed. The eapacity of the machine is considerable; five hundred dozen can be turned out with ease in the day." Discussing this news items with a "Morning Post" reporter recently Mr. C. A. Clarke, of Rotorua, said he could well remember the installation of the machine because the one which it replaced was sent on to him at Rotorua by his father. For many years the old machine manufactured sparkling beverages for early Rotorua until the development of the town justified more modern equipment. To-day it is still "paying its way" as part of a grindstone.
