CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL
TENTATIVE PROGRAMME SUBMITTED TO COUNCIL HOLIDAY ATTRACTlONS At Friday night's meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council, the following tentative programme for Christmas Carnival Week was submitted by the. Advancement Committee and approved : — . Sunday, December 24. — Band coneert and community singing, Town Square, 8.30 p.m. Monday, December 25. — Open air' concert in the Town Square, 8.30 p.m. Tuesday, December 26. — Athletic sports meeting during the afternoon, run hy the Rotorua Athletic Club. Arrival of King Carnival, etc., in the evening. j* Wednesday, 1 December 27. — Air pageant during the day. Maori hangi in the afternoon. Maori concert, bunei. etc., in the evenialg. Thursday, December 28. — Rodeo during the day. S'wimming carnival in the Blue Bath in the evening. Friday, December 29. — Children's picnic ancl sports in the Government Gardens 'dui ing the day. Saturday, December 30 — Children's fancy dress parade and procession in the afternoon. Adult fancy dress rarade and procession in the evening. Sunday, New Year's Eve.- — Band concert at 8.30 p.m. Communit# singing and concert at 10.30 p.m. Rockets, etc., at 12 midnight. _ In connection with the carnival, the committee also reported that a small sub-cominittee had also been set up to consider the possibility of running a queen carnival competition in conjunetion with the carnival week, the crowning ceremony to take place on the evening of New Year's Day. . In order to assist iii popularising the carnival and in the distribution of information eoncerning the carnival, the committee had decided to arrange for an office in the Town Square, which would be manned *by volunteer committee men. In consequence of the very favourable comments after last New Year's carnivai the committee had deeid'ed to carry out an intensive canvas^of shopkeepers with a view to securing their assistance so that the prizes offered for the procession, etc., on New Year's Eve might be substantially increased. The committee had under consideration the questioh of procuring a number of badges which might ^ be sold at a reasonable price to visitors and residents and so assist in promoting the carnival spirit. _ *_' The chairman had been invited to get into touch with Mr. Albert Russell, of Auckland, and ask if he would agree to com© to Rotorua for the carnival period, acting as king carnival and leading community singing at all functions where .this is desirable 'or possible. The committee' had set up a small sub-committee to confer with members of Ngati Whalcaue and' the Returned Soldiers' Association to consider the possibility of improving the Maori regatta on New Year's Day.
