EARNEST CONVICTIONS

FOR HIS COUNTRY'S GOOD The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Finance and joint leader of the Coalition Party, said that Mr. Holland's death removed a vrey prominent Parliamentarian and citizen. His desire and determin-

ation to pay his last respects to an oirtstanding figure in the Maori world was typical of the man. Those near to him knew that the physical effort entailed would be a severe tax upon him but ho would not be dis-

suaded. TI „ „ „ , "In his service E. Holland oyei. many years> Mr Holland played a very prominent part in the affairs of the country," said Mr. Coates. "I believe that I am doing him no injustice when I say that his mind and his actions indicated a preference for radical ideas, but I feel that he earnestly held that his convictions and his views were for the good of the country as a whole. He was a man of his word and I have never known him to go baek upon it. He was widely read with an extensive knowledge of world conditions — a stud'ent who applied himself to his on'erous duties without thought of self. He commanded the respect of

all his fellow members of Parliament and I am sure that I am expressing the feeling of all those members associated with me in extending to his v/ife and family their deepest sympathy. To this I would like to add my own tribute to his many exeellent qualities, and my own personal regard for him as a man."
