Auckland, Wednesday As a sequel to a sensational accident in Parnell on. July 7, .when .two cars collided and Rohert Bums,' who was ,a passenger iin one, had, his neck pierced by a steel curtain rod, the driver, of one car Annette ThorneGeorge, was prosecuted to-day - on-a charge of negligent driving and faiiing to give way. • The police withdrew the first charge, and defendant pleaded guilty to the second. Her counsel said the facts, were less serious than might appear. Burns had been discharged • from hospital. The degree of negligence should not be judged by th'e exfent of the man's injuries. Defendant was fined £2, v/ith costs. Burns made a xemarkable recovery. Before he could be taken to hospital the rod had to he sawn fr.om its .bases hy a hacksaw. At the hospital. .the rest of the rod was withdrawn hy. a surgeon, and a tube inserted to enable him to breathe meanwbile.
