CANADIAN REXNDEER
MEAT FOR EXPORT. Reindeer meat may become a commonplace of the British dinner-table
as the result of a remarkable trek of some 3000 head of reindeer across 1000 miles of wild Canadian country. Three years ago the Canadian Government brought the reindeer herd in Alaska, with the immediate object of providing a source of food and clothing for the Indians and Eskimos of the Mackenzie River distriet of Canada, who have suffered in recent years from the daninution of caribou and other game. Then the big trek began. Now that the Alaskan reindeer, which are first to provide milk, food, transport and materials for tents and clothes for the people of the Mackenzie River region, are nearing their destination, experts predict that by the development of this herd will be established a great world meat l'eserve in Northern Canada. They foresee the establishment of cold storage plants and canning works for preparing reindeer meat both for the Canadian market and export, so that eventually the British housewife will be able to order reindeer cutlets as easily as lamb.
