TAURANGA TEAM BEATEN BY THREE UP ON THE DAY TRICKY CONDITIONS Saturday's matches were played under ideal golfing conditions overhead. The greens were difficult, but it did not appear to militate against good scoring. The match was fourball best ball bogey, and the results were a shock to the "Colonel." The best scores returned were P. Kusabs and McElroy, 6 up; Barker and Empen, 4 up; La Trobe Hill and R. C. Smith, 4 up; Fenton and Parata, 3 up; M. Carr and P. Sherriff, 3 up. Some excellent •individual scores were also recorded, Wallis and Young making the home run in four consecutive threes and a four by sound golf., Match With Tauranga During the week-end a match was arranged between a mixed" team of Tauranga and Rotorua club members doubles and singles being played. The Tauranga visitors number some thirty of both sexes. The morning round ended in favour of the visitors, 5 games to 3. Results were as followd, Tauranga players being mentioned first: — Goulding and Mathieson lost to K. Buddle and R. C. Smith, 1 up. Bradmore and Stedman beat Pott and Barker, 3 and 2. Phelan and Hewatt lost to Anderson and Fenton, 5 and 4. Bryan and Roche beat Wallis and Fry, 1 up. Tobing and Page beat Ford and Wilkie, 3 and 1. • C. Roberts and Butts lost to Walden and French, 3 and 1. Bateman and Heald beat Hamilton and Stanier, 3 and 1. Merrielees and Baddely beat Worthington and Roe, 5 and 4. During the game a drizzling rain fell almost continuously and only eased off after one o'clock. The afternoon round was played under finer conditions, though underfoot fairways were wet and heavy. Afternoon results were: — Bradmore and Goulding lost to Buddle and Smith, 3 and 2. Stedman and Bryan beat Anderson and Fenton, 4 and 2. Phelan and Mathieson lost to Barker and Pott, 3 and 2. Tobing and Page beat Ford and French, 5 and 4. Bateman and Merrielees beat Gee and Wilkie, 5 and 4.
Roche and Roberts lost to Wallis and Young, 3 and 2. Heald and Butt lost to Walden and W. Kusabs, 8 and 7. Heald and Baddely and Lunn and Anderson, all square. Ladies' Matches The results of the morning round were : — Mrs. Heald and Miss Saunders and Miss Snodgrass and Mrs. La Trobe Hill, all square. Mrs. Stedman and Miss Whitworth beat Mrs. Budd and Miss Moon, 2 up. Mrs. Hanna and Miss Humphreys lost to Mrs. R. C. Smith and Miss Dannefaerd, 3 and 2. Miss Bateman and Miss Hartley beat Mrs. J. Sherriff and Mrs. Clay, 3 and 2. The afternoon results were: — Mrs. Heald beat Miss Snodgrass, 1 up. Miss Saunders and Mrs. La Trobe l Hill, all square. Miss Humphries and Miss Moon, all square. Mrs. Stedman lost to Mrs. Budd, 2 up. Miss Whitworth lost to Mrs. R. C. Smith, 3 and 2. Miss Hanna lost to Miss Dannefaerd, 3 and 2. Miss Bateman lost to Mrs. Sherriff, 5 and 4. Miss Hartley lost to Mrs. Clay, 2 and 1.
Final Results Ladies. — Morning, Tauranga, 1 up; afternoon, Rotorua, 4 up. Men. — Morning, Tauranga 5, Rotorua, 3; afternoon, Tauranga 3, Rotorua 4 up. At the close of the match Dr. S. H. Hay, president of the club, in farewelling the team expressed his pleasure in being able to return some of the hospitality which the Rotorua players had experienced at the hands of the Tauranga club in their matches on the coast. R. H. Goulding, captain of the Tauranga club, thanked the speaker and the members of the club, stating that their players had had a splendid time and greatly enjoyed themselves. Cheers for both sides with musical obligato ended a very fine day's sport. Visitors Among those distinguished in the world of golf playing on the links during the week-end were A. D. C. Duncan, the Dominion's most habitual champion, I. B. McEwan, winner of the Rotorua open amateur, J. C. Bidwell, of the Wairarapa, a constant and consistent performer in first-class golf, and many others from the Dominion and overseas.
