SENIOR COMPETITION

CARNIVAL IDEAS. ! FIRST PRIZE AWARD. (Wild Rose, aged 13, Hinemoa S.t.) Dear Colleen, — Here are a few 'ideas for the Carnival which I hope will interest you. 1. I think that during the evening, j men, women and children should don fancy dresses of all varieties and gay j colours, with masks, and that they ! should do as they like (dance in the j street, etc.) until m'idnight, when j everyone should take their masks off. I 2. As there are many girls and boys 1 in Rotorua who are quite clever with ! their hands, perhaps we could have a j competition for each sex, inviting j them to make some useful gift for j mother. | 3. Folk dances. how delightful it [ would be for the people to dress in t old-fashioned clothes and dance in | the town square. i 4. Nations! What a good idea, each | person dressed in the costume of some j nation or country and f orm an Emi pire procession. I m,ean the very old 1 costumes, English, Victorian skirts j etc; New Zealand, Maoris. ! 5. Let's not forget to give big, i smiles to everyone about and a cheery word to help one another along. It's hard td suggest* anything else because we have such a gay time in Rotorua that there is little else we can have to pass the time away. SECOND AWARD. (Peanut, 12, Elizabeth' St.) Dear Colleen. These ,are my suggestions for this week's competition: — 1. Stricter traffic regulation, with one-way traffic only. 2. Open-air children's concert. 3. Rental of town square to merry-go-round owner be reduced, so that the rides could be 3d, giving; the poorer class of children a chance to have a ride. 4. Battle of flowers. 5. Fireworks display, amusing for

yourig and old. 6. Demonstration hy Rotorua Fire Brigade. Build a whare of raupo and other materials, then set on fire; give the alarm to show the quiclc work of qur local fire brigade. 7. Race for launch'es on lake, making it a yearly event. Cup and troPhy. THIRD AWARD. (Peach Blossom, 12, Hinemoa St.) Dear Colleen,—My suggestion for Carnival Week is that all the children from six to twelve should he given a prize for the best deeorated bicycle and cart, also the owner of each to be in fancy dress. The children's fancy dress bqll is geneyally very flat and I think it wouldi he a good idea to have a children's fancy dress mask ball and those who have not got a mask on to be chargfed a penny, also that the music for the dances should he populqr songs, so that the children can sing while dancing. I can't think of any more just now, but if I do, I will write again.
