MAJESTIC THEATRE
SATURDAY. "The Ring,er," a British Dominions film, which will be shown at the Ma- ' jestic Theatre on Saturday, is one of Edgiar Wallace's greatest thrillers, and has already ibeen presented both as a stage play and as a silent film. Walter Forde, who direeted the talkie version, claims this as being' the first time in his lozzg directorial career whcn he has had znore than -one actress in the cast. Every previous picture he has direeted introduced only one feminine part — that of thq heroine. Carol Goodner and Dorothy Bart--lam are the actresses who share the 'honours in the feminine leads, while Gordon Harker, Patric Curwen, Franklyn Dyall and John Longden complete the cast. The story of "The Ringer" — the elusive crimjinal who holds his enemles in terror and comes and goes with haffling certainty, finally evenging his znishandled sister, and slipping away under the very noses of the police — is known to countless thosuands all over the world, but so deftly are the situations contrived, iand so cumulative is the suspense, that the tale never ceases to exercise 1 its fascination; and its remarkable power is increased in the film version which moves swiftly frorn scene to scene, and heightens the znystery and the effect as it goes. In the second feature, "Deadlock," are shown the amusing a.nd tragic incidtnts that can happezi in a film studio. How an old actor and actress, hating the sight of each other, hide their feelings to make violent 'love to each other before the microphone — how ia. talkie is filzned and recorded and passes through various stages before it reaches the screen, are all introdueed in this picture — but these •izzcidents play a definite part izz the working out of the story.
