PROTECTION OF CANNING INDUSTRY VITALLY IMPORTANT Dunedin, fl'iday. The president of the Cheviot Fruitgrowers' Association, Mr. J. B. Gilmour appeared before the Tariff Commission to-day and requested that in any revision of the tariffs affecting the canning industry, the interests of the fruit growers should be recognised. The interests of the canners and the growers were inter-dependent and any reduction in the present tariff on canned fruit would result in fruit growing beco'ming imposisble. Mr. G. A. Skene, president of the Horticultural Seed Merchants' Association, asked for the renewal of duty on imported packets without illustrations. The cnmmission expects to leave for Christchurch on Thursday.
