, OLD STUDENTS LEAD ABSENTEE PLAYERS UPSET KOWHAI'S USUAL COMBINATION NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By '

Last Saturday's weather was not conducive to good basketball the wind often carrying the ball out of its course and making bad passing and fumbling unavoidable. As both teams were in the running for the championship the match between H.S'.O.S. A and Kowhai was expected to be a very close contest. Contrary to expectations, however, the game was not of very high. standard and Old Students had no difficulty- in defeating their opponents by 16 goals to 3. Kowhai did not give their usual good exhibition 'and emergencies seen filling the positions of experienced players, indicated absentees in the usual team combination. It was most unfortunate that in their most important game of the season, Kowhai should have had a "day off." Although Old Students were victorious they were not seen at their best. Faulty passing in defence "and centre bases often lost them possession of the ball, but tbe forwards were quick to grasp opportunities that came their way and the accurate goal shooting of V. Robertson was responsible for the majority of goals gained by Old Students. The quickness displayed by H. Dawson (O.S.) in gaining possession of the ball from a "throw-up" was remarkable. D. Emeny, tbe popular captain of the Kowhai team, proved herself the best centre on the field. Huia once again failed to fulfil its engagements, so lost by default to H.S.O.S'. B. Notes That the recent tournament was appreciated by the visiting team is evideneed by the numerous appreciative letters they have sent congratu'lating the association and returned thanks for the hospitality extended. Rotorua is in demand this year for the representative team to pay visits to other centres, no less than six invitations having been received. It is not possible to accept them all, but the A representatives will play Training College in Auckland and possibly a game against the Auckland Catholic Association, while the B team will visit Opotiki on September 23. The H.S.O.S. B team will play an Old Students team at Matamata on October 7. To-morrow's Fixtures Games to be played at the Government Grounds to-morrow are as follows : — Waratah v. Kowhai, 2.30 p.m., No. 1 court. H.S.O.S. A v. H.S.O.S. B, 2.30 p.m. ,No. 2 court.
