native chief resents man's immoral conduct ■orders a flogging

— By Telegraph — Copyrlght).

Capetown, Sept. 13. Phineas Mclntosh was sentenced at Palapye to banishment from all native territories. He admitted assaulting a native who hit a native woman with whom he (Maclntosh) was living in a native settlement. The offieial evidence gave a deplorable account of his relations with native women. The sentence has given general satisfaction. The resident Commissioner of Bechuanaland has served an order on Chief Tahekedi limiting his movements within an area in the Palapye carnp and suspending his chieftainship pending the result of an inquiry into the Native Gourt's action in awarding lashes in the case of Maclntosh. A cable a day or two ago stated that 200 marines with two howitzers left by train for Bechuanaland as an escort for Admiral Evans, actingHigh Commissioner, who is on his way to investigate the fiogging of a European, by order of a Native Court. The European, Phineas Maclntosh, was charged with immorality against natives. The chief Tahekedi informed the Europeans after the trial that Maclntosh, his brother and another man had been repeatedly before him on similar charges.
