SPEED LIMITS
DEPARTMENT'S REVOCATION ON HAMILTON-ROTORUA SECTION Objections to the revocation of the speed by-laws of 1932 for the Te Papapa-Rotorua section of the HamiL-ton-Rotorua main highway was decided upon by the Rotorua County Council yesterday, when the council was advised of this action by the Public Works Department. The chairman, Cr. H. P. Ford, considered that the department had no right to remove speed limit signs placed on the Mamaku section of the highway controlled by the county. The Public Works Department was certainly maintaining the road, but the council was providing a subsidy. i The advisability of removing the speed limit was a very debatable point and the council did not know where they stood in the matter of control of the roads. Cr. J. E. Martin considered that the speed limits placed on use of the road had proved quite satisfactory in the past. It was necessary that some control should be exercised as There were always the drivers who would scorch on any road. Cr. R. C. Smith thought that the narrowness of the Mamaku Road made control desirable, particularly as there was much traffic on the road. It was decided to forward an objection to the department, asking for a reconsideration of the matter. The support of the Matamata County Council is also to be sought.
