rotorua scheme COUNCIL APPROVES PRINCIPLE OF AN ATTRACTIVE BOOKLET 'PROPOSAL SUBMITTED A letter was receiyed by the Rotorua Borough Council last evening from a motor services organisation, operating all over the Dominion, outlining a proposal to issue a specially illustrated and published booklet .dealing with the scenic attractions of the Dominion and of Rotorua in particularl. The publication would be carried out on the latest publicity lines and other interested companies and organisatiojis were being asked to participate Th.e company irfitiating the proposal was prepared to contribute £150 toward the cost and the Government was also being asked for a contribution. It was suggested, in view of the value of the publication to Rotorua, that the council might make a contribution of £25. Ten thousand of the booklets were to be issued and distributed extensively in New Zealand and abroad. "Dummy" copies of the suggested publication were submitted for eouncillor's inspection. The mayor said that he had . been approached in regard to the matter, and he considered that if the Advancement Committee had any funds available for a matter of this description, it would be an excellent investment. Cr. J. Banks, chairman of the committee, pointed out that Rotorua would be particularly featured. This would be a first-class publication and one which he considered would attract the right class of visitor to New Zealand and to Rotorua. New photographs would be obtained and views ■ of Rotorua would be particularly featured. Cr. E. T. Johnson approved of the idea, but said that he did not think that the publication should go out featuring. one particular company. He noticed that in the "dummys" submitted one company was featured. Cr. Banks said that another transport company was also interested and that this feature of the publication would be rearranged. Cr. F. Goodson raised the question of pifeedent. If another company came aiong with a similar proposition would the council subsidise that. Cr. Bayfeild thought it was an excellent proposal as outlined and that the council. on the face of it, would get good value for £25. He agreed with Cr. Goodson, however, that the question of a precedent must be watched. Cr. Goodson said that there were ot-f pr large companies in New Zealand catering for the tourist business and he thought that the proposal should be supported if it was understood that any other company putting for ward a similar suggestion would also be supported. The mayor suggested that the council agree to the principle of the proposal and that the final decision be left to the Advancement Committee. If the committee agreed to the proposal, it could handle the details in regard to the council's publicity matter in the booklets.
