ROTORUA CLUB FIRST ANNUAL MEETING HELD LAST NIGHT SUCCESSFUL PAST SEASON A most successful first season was reeorded in the report placed before members of the Rotorua Amateur Swimming' Club at its annual general mfieting last night by .the presid. nt, Mr. W. L. Richards. The report stated: — As the year under review is our first as a swimming organisation, your committee believe that the mem- ' bers can view it with considerable pride, not from the standpoint of showing a substantial financial balance, but from the fact that the club has infused interest in swimming matt'.rs .generally, and brought to the front through our carnivals and competitions many young people, who from a swimming point of view, may have remained in the background for an indefinite period. Five -carnivals have been held in the Blue Bath and were well patronised, indicating that your club has provided a bi*anch of sport much appreciated by the public. Competitiors We have been favoured with visits from many prominent swimmers, chief among them being four very competcnt men from Australia; also visitors from Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Napier, Matamata, and many competitors representing various clubs in the South Auckland Cen•tre. With the object of popularising our club it was tiiought necessary to taka ■our swimmers to many of the various functions held in diffe rent parts of the centre. This was much appreciated by the different organisations, and although, perhaps, desirable during the first year of the club's existence, it may be thought advisable, if possible, to exercise economy in this direction during the coming season. An outstanding feature of our first year's operations, was the wonderful success achieve d by W. Whareaitu. He not only holds the 50 yards New Zealand record, but also in various competitions proved himself an outstanding swimmer, -and we feel sure he has a most promising swimming future. Much of the crtdit for Whareaitu's snccess is due to the very pol pular local coach, Mr. J. Perrin. H? has been most keen in his work with the young swimmer, and it is most pleasing to note that they are a viry happy combination. Appreciation The assistance given by Mr. Perrin to your club has been invaluable and we take this opportunity of extending our appreciation to him. Our thanks are due to the many willing helpers wh0 have assisted so materially to make our functions a success, not excluding the bath officials who have been a tower of strength to us. The club cannot pay too high a tribute to the "Morning Post", which has ahvays place d its columns at our disposal. We wish also to extend our appreciation and thanks to Mrs. Lee (U.S.A.), Messrs W. L. Richards, L. Fisher and Macky, Logan, Caldwell, Ltd., who donated valuable trophies to the club. Your executive is deserving of th? club's appreciation. It is a job that entails attending many meetings. Members were enthusiastic, and are responsible for any success the season's activities may have achieve 1. In conclusion, may I express my thanks for the cordial support received during the season's operations. The committee worktd exceedmgly well in the genei'al interest and welfare of the club, and I feel sure the .successful future of our organisation is assuixd. Adoption Moved In t'ormally moving Ihe adoption of the report and balance-sheet the president said that the progress of the club during its first year had been most satisfaetory, despite fihe fac« that the expenses of the carnivals and travelling had been heavy. The ren'al charged the club for the use of the Blue Bath was a question which the incoming committee would have to seriously eonsidor, as a continuavr-ui of, such high rental would leave .10 margin for the accumulation of a eserve fund to provide against loss on a carnival owing to wet weather. 3y the amount of travelling done in Ihe first year the club had created goodwill which would greatly enho'mc its prospects for future progress Useful Service Before procec ding to the election of officers the president paid a tribute to Mr. H. Wilkinson, who was unable to continue as secretary of the club. During the club's initial year the retiring secretary had shown great interest and performed fine service in the club's interests. Mr. Wilkinson suitably replied. Election of Officers The election of officers for the ensu- 1 ing twelve months resulted as follows: Patron, Dr. J. D. C. Duncan; president, Mi\ W. L. Richards; vicc-yresid-ents, Messrs T. S-. Robertson, .1 . Walden, E. G. Guy; hon-sccreta -y, Mr. W. S. Henderson; hon. treasu.er, Mr. L. H. Gresham; club captain, Mr. L. Fisher; vice-captain, Mr. 11. Fitzwilliam; ladies' club captain, Miss J.
I Greig; assistant ladies' club captain, Mrs. Wells; committee, Messrs B. M. Green, H. L. Musgrave, E. Fitzwilliam, Misses J. Greig and Y. Ford; assistant-secretary, Mr. W. Pitts; auditor, Mr. L. C. Ryan. Rule Amen.dm.ent ; Mr. L. Fisher formally moved a I motion, of which notice had been , I given, that rule 12 of tbe club's con- j j stitution respecting the calling of the annual meeting be amended by the addition of the words "nominations for which will close with the secretary seven days prior to the meeting, such nominations to be signed by the nominators, seconders and nominees." j The motion was seeoiided by Mr. T. S. f Robertson and carried. I Mr. Robertson pointed out that the ' rules of the club did not provide for any definite date for the advertisemnt calling for the annual general meeting and he moved that a newspaper :advertisement he inserted atTeast 14 days before the night of the meeting. The motion was approved. * Extra Club Night ! The suggestion- that a fortnightly club night should be held in the Blue Batbs was made by Mr. E. Fitzwil- . liam. He said that a number of mem- . bers had thought they did not get suf- ' ficient for their last year's subscription. Mr. E. G. Guy objected to the statei ment that members had not received '■ sufficient return for their small subscriptions. In addition to the carnivals run by the club, members had also received reduced rates at the baths. : This view was supported by Mr. L. Fisher and the president, it being stated that two club nights had been held, with disappointing results. i It was deeided that a sub-commit-tee comprising Messrs L. Fisher, E. Fitzwilliam and Miss J. Greig report to the next committee meeting on the prospects of arranging club nights. It was decidt-d that the general ■ committee meet at least monthly on , the fourth Friday of each month.
