CREMATION

HINDU'S BODY BURNED 0 ON FUNERAL PYRE CEREMONY AT HAMILTON Hamilton, Wednesday. An unusual event,- the cremation of an Indian on a funeral pyre, took place at the Hamilton East Cemetery this afternoon. Deceased was Ram Chand, aged 50, r. hawker, of Otorohanga, and had been in New Zealand for 14 years. A funeral pyre was built on the river hank near the cemetery and deceased, who was in a plain coffin, was laid on it when it was about two feet high. More wood was placed on top and around it, until the coffin ewas completely covered. A brief Sikh funeral .service was spoken by Pritum Singh, who offered up the prayers for deceased's entry into Heaven. The pyre was then lit and six pounds of butter, some cloves and camphor were sprinkled over it. The coffin was quickly consumed by the flames.
