WAIKAREMOANA BUSH (To the Editor.) Sir, — In your issue of August 25, I noticei a letter by ,a. correspondent signed "Forest Lover" in which he makes reference to the way trees are being destroyed to put a line to Ruatahuna. ■Now, sir, you may not be aware that the land the line is going through is Maori ground and we consider the telephone of more importance to us than' a few trees; at present they are only clearing such trees as may be likely to come on the line. I may state in the near future it is our intention to fell all the bush, as we intend to farm the land in a proper and profitable manner, and would be quite unable to do this in standing bush. Trusting this will ma.ke things clear to any who may be misled. — I am, etc., TUHOEKATOA. Replies to Correspondents South African: Mafeking was relieved on Friday, May 19, 1900.
