VETERANS' GOLF

qualifying rounds SEASONED GOLFERS FROM ALL PARTS OF N.Z. COMMENCEMENT TO-DAY Veteran golfers fromas far south! as Timaru and from practically every club in the North Island have assembled in Rotorua this week for the annual New Zealand's Golf Veterans' tourney which opens on the Arikikapakapa links this morning. Golf is a game essentially for the seasoned and experienced player and the age minimum of 55 set for veterans finds some of the best known golfing figures in the Dominion eligible as competitors. Entries this year reached the available limit and a most successful and interesting tournament is promised. Yesterday the majority of those competing were over the course and some excellent rounds were done. H. B. Lusk, who last week won the Rotorua Club's open championship, will be competing as.a veteran, but he will be strongly challenged by a number of others. Tallis, of Timaru, is playing particularly well at present, and did a very steady round yesterday. Another hard one will be Agmen Smith, of Papakura, who is always a force to be r.eckoned with in veterans' tournament play. Among the Rotorua representatives, C. E. Kusabs has been well handicapped at 15, while Redhead, with 13 should also give a good account of himself. Yesterday's heavy rain stiffened up the fairways very noticeably, but did not affect the greens to the same extent. Given fine weather to-day, playing conditions should be excellent. The veterans' tournament has an unique quality in that it is the means for the reunion of very many old golfing stalwarts who have now come to look upon it as one of the events of their year.
