rioting in st. pierre leads to many arrests

— By Telegraph— -C '.pyrightj.

St. Pierre (Miquelon), Aug. 27. Rioting by the populace of St. Pierre in protest against the imposition of taxes by the Governor of the French colony resulted in the rushing of two warships to the port and the occupation of the city by armed sailors. A number of citizens have been arrested and sailors are patrolling the streets. The Governor's action was taken in disregard of a protesting note by the elected members .of the Government Council. Miquelon consists of two islands (Great and Little) off the south-west coast of Newfoundland, forming the only remaining French colony in North America.
