New York, August 24. Death, terror and destruction rode with the maddest storm to strike the Atlantic seaboard in many yeard which, after Wednesday's fury, roared up into New York State and the Great Lakes region to-day as. a 50-mile-an-hour gale, with driving rain. The deaths reported numher well over a dozen,u while the damage to property reaches millions of dollars. The s.s. Madison, which called for help yesterday and to the aid of wbich coastguard cutters were sent, limped into. Norfolk, Virginia, under her own power, reporting that the second mate and the quartermaster were swept overboard on Wednesday when - they went on deck to investigate the damage by the first wave of the hurricane. Captain William Heath said that the wave was the greatest he ever saw. It tore away the forward deckhouse and wrecked mueh of the superstructure. There were 109 all told on the Madison, and the haggard passengers disembarked after a sleepless night, wearing lifebelts. The crack Southern Railway train, the Cresent Limited, en route from New York to New Orleans, hurtled through the rainsoaked bridge spanning the Anacostia River, near Washington, early this morning, killing the engineer and fireman, 'and injuring 13. Eight were killed in Virginia. The damage to Virginia Beach alone is estimated at 1,000,000 dollars. The storm smashed seashore resorts and marooned many communities. Wreckage of, small craft dotted the Atlantic coastline. There were serious traffic jams in New York city as the result of flooded highways and railway tracks. Trees were scattered ahout the streets.
