ROTORUA LIBRARY
COUNCIL AUTHORISES AN ASSISTANT ON TRIAL EXTENDING THE HOURS The Rotorua Borough Council last evening decided, on the recommendation of the Library Committee to "eihploy an assistant librarian for a trial period of six months in an endeavour to improve the library facilities and increase the support being given by the public. It was also decided to circularise residents of town and district drawing their attention to the change in hours and other iraprovements. The committee recommended that if an asistant librarian was engaged, the library should be kept open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. continuously and from 7 to 9 p.m. on six days a week. Cr. Geo. Steele and Cr. Woolliams both suported the suggestion. They considered that something should be done to popularise the library and that the hours should be extended for the convenience of the public. The mayor (Mr. T. Jackson), said that there were at present only 220 subscribers to the library; this was a low figure and indicated that something should be done to secure more subscribers. In the past, the library had been closed so much that many people had — frw Violnno- tn ordinarv cir-

The council decided to authorise the employment of an assistant librarian on a six months' trial, councillors expressing the opinion that a trial should he made to ascertain whether the additional assistance would lead to an adequate return. _ It was decided to advertise the position at a salary of 30s a week.
