SEWERAGE SYSTEM

EXTENSION TO OHINEMUTU IS CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL MINISTER SYMPATHETIC The hope that he would give the matter his sympathetic support in the event of its coming before Cabinet, was expressed by the Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) last evening whert placing before the Minister of Public Works , (Hon. J. Bitchener) the facts with regard to the proposed sewerage scheme at Ohinemutu pa. Mr. Jackson said he was aware that this particular matter did not come within the sphere of Mr. Bitehener's department but he hoped at the. same time to enlist his support. It is considered essential in the interests if the health of the community that the present sewerage schemes which ernbraced the town itself and the native . village at Whakarewarewa should be extended to Ohinemutu. The borough had now set its house in order but before the position could be considered satisfactory, the reticulation should be extended to both of the native .villages within the borough boundaries. With the assista, nce of the Native Department the reticulation at Whaka was now in the course of construction hut the same faeilities would also have to be extended to Ohinemutu in the nea.r future. It was estimated that the total cost of the work would be. in the vicinity of £7000; the borough was prepared to contribute its share and undertake the maintenance of the system after it was installed hut it was probable that the Native Department would have to make a contribution in the vicinity of £4,700. The Native Minister had been sympathetic when approached and had said that it_ might be possible io obtain a portion of the cost from the natives themselves. It was probable, however, that Sir Apirana would he compelled to ask Cabinet for a grant and if this was the case, Mr. Jackson hoped that Mr. Bitchener would give the proposal his support. The Minister, in reply, said that he fully appreciated the importance of the matter from a health point of view. He was impressed hy the case which had been placed before him and he couid assure them that the proposal would have his sympathetic consideration if it came before Cabinet.
