illegal trade in opossum skins unearthed in sydney
-By Telegraph — Cnpyright).
Sydney, August 17. Local detectives, working in conjunction with Scotland Yard, have. unearthed an extensive illeg-al traffic in opossum skins, whicb have been shipped to London either as rabbit or i'ox skins secreted in wool bales. The slaughter of opossums is prohibited in New South Wales, and heavy fines are provided. Detectives estimate, as a result of their investigations of the books of certain firms in Sydney, that at least 100,000 skins have been shipped overseas surreptitiously since 1931, the value of which, despite the depressed market, is in the vicinity of £30,000. Evidence has been procured that motor lorries brought the skins frorii the country to the city by night to an or^anisation which is run on systematic lines.
