MOROCCAN WAR

fierce berbers MAKE DESPERATE STAND AMONG RUGGED HILLS THE LAST STRONGHOLD

-By Telegraph— CopjTfgfit).

(Rec. 7.10 p.m.) London, August 18. Mr. Ward Priee, correspond'ent with the French army in Morocco, says that the French advance has been hindered by Berber sharpshooters condealed in mountain caves. These were stormed by the French and cleared after five days' fighting when the column reached the steep hill commanding the low slopes of Mt. Badou, the formidable last stronghold of the Berbers. Aeroplane reports indicate a concentration of the Berber forees in the surrounding hills. Each tribe fights desperately under the blazing sun, defending its own small tract of barren country and scrubby herds. One force of 3,500 Berbers has surrendered. The men are fierce and the women swarthy, tattooed and handsome. They have been placed in a concentration camp.
