street formation REPORT OF COMMITTEE UPON GENERAL OPERATIONS LIGHTING ADJUSTMENTS At the meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council on Wednesday evening the Works Committee reported as follows: — Rangiuru Street: That the trucks and rails have been procured from the Public Works Department and that the work on this street has now been put in hand. Ohinemutu: That with referenee to the r.equests from the Komiti Marae considered at the last meeting of the council, repairs to the floor of .the convenience and supply of rubbish tins have been attended to and the engineer has been asked to report re culverts. Crusher: Having written to Messrs Colletts, Ltd.,, re fa.ulty casting in the crusher pitman. Allocation of Duties: Having drawn up a schedule of duties for Messrs Dunbar and Bailey on their redueed wages. Treie Sltitmps: Having authoniisied the cutting down of the grass margin on Fenton Street to fill in the holes from which the stumps have been taken, the cycle track to be widened at the same lev.el as at present. Breaches of By-law: Having drawn the attention of property-holders to the fact that it is a breach of the by-laws to deposit ashes, hedge clippings and other rubbish on the streets. Pound Cottage: Having authorised the engineer to have the electric light switches in the pound cottage repaired. Street Lights. — With l'egard to street lighting the committee recommended the following adjustments. Pukuatua Street. Remove light at present on the south side approximately two chains west of Ranolf Street. That the cen.tre light in Union, Toko and Eason Streets be removed and one placed at the corner of Toko and Victoria Streets, one at the corner of Eason and Victoria Streets .and one at the cornjer of Eason Street and Malfroy Road; that the light at present at the head of Lytton Street in Malfroy Road be removed to the intersection of Union Street and Malfroy Road and that a new light be placed at the intersection of Toko Street and Malfroy Road. Wairoa Road: That a new light be placed on the west side on the third pole north of Ti Street, and that the Tourist Department b,e requested to put a brighter light on the north end of the benzine store. Ti Street: That a new light be installed on the third pole from Fenton Street.
| Seddon Street: That a new light be | erected at- the intersection of Old Taupo Road. ! Phillip Street That a new light be ! erected at the intersection of ElizaI beth Street. Your committee has met Mr. II. J. Hardie, electrical sqfperintendent of the Tourist Department, and discussed with hhn the possibility of improving the lighting of streets in the main part of the town. Certain experiments will be carried out and suggested alterations considered and a further report will be submitted to the council at a later date. Formation of Miller Street: That the request of Mr. Iles that the formation of Miller Street south of Elizabeth Street should not be proceeded with at present be acceded to subject to Mr. Iles lodging1 with the council, a cheque to cover the cost of formation and pumicing; the engineer to prepare an estimate of the cost to comply with the requir.ements of the council. Formation of Elizabeth Street: That the question of liability or otherwise of the owner of Sections 5 and 6 to pipe the drain in Phillip Street to give access from Elizabeth Street to Phillip Street be referred to the borough solicitors for their opinion.
Stormwater Drain: That provided the owner of Section 14, Rotorua Suburbs, is agreeable and Mr. Iles will bear the cost his request that the drain be dug to connect up with the Phillip Street drain be acceded to. Pumicing of Streets: That Mr. Iles be informed that the council will supply the necessary pumice for the pumicing of Elizabeth Str.eet formation at the usual royalty of ls per cubic yard. Caretakers, Native Villages: That the wages of the caretaker at Ohinemutu be redueed to £3- per week and the wages of the caretaker at Whakarewarewa be left at the present amount of £2 10s per week. Removal of Refuse: That in all casjs where it has been the practiee of ;he carter to go a eonsiderable dis;ance from the street in order to colect rubbish and where there is no •easonable access, the proprietors of such premises be required in future ;o bring their rubbish receptacles out io the street line. This recommendaion is necessary because there are ^ ilaees where it is necessary for the :art to be backed in .the whole depth .f the section. With the exception of the clause recrring to the stormwater dra.in for ! lr. Iles the report and recommendaions were adopted.
