MISS GLEITZE ABANDONS ATTEMPT AFTER 8 HOURS

(Rec. August 3) London, August 2. Miss Mercedes Glietzp who in 19.27 swam from the French coast to Dover this morning hegan an attempt to swim th'e channel from Dover to the Frpnch coast. She hoped to reach France in 20 hours, After six hours. -she was swimming strongly about eight miles east of Dovei-, but she abandoned the swim after being eight hours in the water owing to a r-ising wind and rough sieas. She had then covered ten miles. Miss Gleitze on October 7, 1927, swam from Cape 'Gris Nez to Lyddon Spout, Dover in 15 hours 15 minutes.
