VICTORIAN VIGRANTS

(Press Assn.

DELUDED BY PROMISES

— By Telegraph — Copyrlght).

(Rec. 7.10 p.m.) London, July 28. During the debate upon Dominion affairs in the House of Commons, Mr W. Lunn (Lab.) Rothwell, described the Victorian settlement scheme as the worst he had ever heard of. Many migrants had been deluded by false promises which were almost criminal and were now destitute. He ■considered that Victoria should indemnify these migrants. The British 1 Government was not blameless; it i houlcl have studied the sche.me more carefully. Mr. J. Maxton (Lab.) Bridgeton, said that Mr. Thomas had been unable to make a decision in regard to the Victorian migrants but that he had acted promptly when the Irish dispute had become a question of interest payable to shareholders. Mr. Thomas, in replying, said that he hoped there would be a settlement in a few days which would do justice to the Victorian migrants.
