FINDLAY CUP GAME

"Lock")

INDIVIDUAL REVIEW OF TE ARAWA'S CUP TEAM A STRONG COMBINATION

(Notes by

With no football at Arawa Park on Saturday on account of the Hunt Club's fixture, local interest will be centred on how the seniors fare in their Findlay Cup match against Matamata. Kahukura juniors have a friendly engagement at Cambridge, but this is an unofficial game and will be only of interest to the club supporters. In view of the decisive defeat at the hands of Morrinsville a few Saturdays back and also recognising the low standard of our senior football, it seems fruitless to keep chasing cups against such strong opposition as Morrinsville and Matamata. Of course it can be argued that in the Morrinsville game the muddy and slippery state of the playing field suited the home team and that they were well sprigged and shod for the occasion, also it is agreed it was not the original team that took the field as several players had to be substituted at the last minute. Still it can hardly be said had it been a fine day and the original team fielded that Rotorua would have been the winners, especially in view of the fact that Morrinsville last Saturday administered a severe beating to Paeroa by 42 points to 3. Saturday, August 5, will see the completion of the first round of the junior competition and unless the juniors are engaged in a heavy representative programme, it will be possible to carry through with the second round as there are some ten playing S'aturdays before the close of the season. The lifting of the weight limit of the juniors this season has resulted in many more players being able to get a game and incidentally has been responsible for a higher standard oi football; this is reflected in the strong combination the junior representatives have proved themselves. The game with Waipa in the final of the Clarke Cup will be a football treat and if played on the Rotorua ground should greatly swe.ll the gate receipts.
