Waihi, Wednesday. Twelve men had a remarkable escape from death when a cable broke as the men wene being lowered down No. 2 ishaft at 'the! Waihi' Goldmining Coy's". mine this afternoon. The cage, with its living freight, broke aWiay as a result of the clutch coming away from the ringine, and shot downwards with 'a terrific velocity for a dis'tance of 1350 feet where it was arrested by coming irito violent coritact with a 12 x 12 hardwood beam. The injuries were fortunately confined to the legs of the men due to the terrific jolt when the cage came to a stop. The most seriously injured of the men were. — William Taylor, both legs broken. Sam Hamilton, fractured ankle and splintered shin. Len Coward, broken leg. Jack Gordon, broken leg. Others who were not so seriously injured were Harry and Fred Gornes, Herbert Butler and J. Follas. Chambermen at the different levels as the cage rushed past, saw only a grey blur 'and showers of sparks. The whining and booming noise caused hy the runaway cage was heard half a mile away. Hundreds of people remained at the shaft-hea'd over two hours as the irijured were brought up singly in the cage.
