WITH THE GALLOPERS
(Notes by "Canard.")
THE HUNT FIELDS MOST RACES WILL PROVIDE GOOD SPOIRTING CONTESTS SEVERAL JUMPING EVENTS
The Rotorua Hunt Club has every reason to feel satisfied with the response of owners and trainers to its call for acceptances for its first hunt steeplechase meeting and despite the counter attraction of the Poverty Bay races, such excellent fields have heen carded that the publie should feel well provid&d for by the end of the day. The class of horse accepting is good and better than the average in hunt meetings, for not only are there a good many outside entrants, but there is a good sprinkling of locally-owned and district trained horses. The Members Steeples has attracted a field of a dozen of whom King Fame, Tapapa, Master Albyn, Taha, Bonny Play and Kilstar have previous racing form while of the others, several have shown pace and jumping ability in the hunting field. This race is for gentlemen riders and usually provides an interesting event at similar meetings. In the Innovation Handicap, the six furlong hack event, Grand City, Lady Zinnia, Tapapa and Kingsland have previously sported silk. Lucky Strike was seen out at Te Puke and Morley
and Lady1 Diacquenod are trained on the course. This should also be an interesting race. The Hunters' Hurdles has filled well with Grantham, who won at Opotiki top of the list, and such sorts as London ( a previous winner on the cuurse), Silver Division (several brackets to his name) and Tarapeen among those entered. The Master's Handicap of a mile, the principal race of the day on the flat, sees Valpai, Beau Irish, Princess Bede, from the Waikato, and Merry Lap, owned at Warkworth and Monanui owned at Whangarei, competing among others so that the representation is widely seattered. i The Hunt Club Cup has a, really good field headed by St. Warrigal, who won steeples at Paeroa and Te Rapa in the past and also was placed in the south. Nukutere has won at Ellerslie and Wako King all but won a Great Northern and appears sound now. Star of the East has won good steeples at Paeroa and Ellerslie and Creina's King at Paeroa while Prince Rufus' career was dealt with by "Canard" some weeks ago. He has a Century Hurdles to his bow. Of the others, Bonny Play once ran a great race at Paeroa and Coachman has done a bit of jumping. ! There is also a nice list in the Lad- , ies' Bracelet but here many of the eni tries are mentioned earlier in the day ■ and they may start in both. The usual gentlemen riders' conditions prevail . which has a lot to do with the punting. In any case it should be a handy race. ! The last event of the day is a more or less open six and the field is quxte good. Again there are dual engagements and these pr event much antepost speculation. The ccurse is in the very best of order and the club is going out of its way to make every arrangement for the public. It has certainly had a wonderful response from the owners and trainers and now it remains for the public to do its share and roll up. I The actual form and review of the fields will be the subject of an article by "Canard'' in a later issue.
