Street, Opotiki on Saturday evenmg rraffic Inspector Morrell ' called- the services of the police and when accompanying Sergeant Miller and Kelly to the police station was dealt a violent blow on the jaw by Kelly which' sent him unconseious. Kelly was therefor-e charged at the police court to-day Wiith the attempted theft of an overcoat and with assaalting Henry Joseph MorrelL Accused pleaded guilty to both charges and said that the reason why he hit the traffic inspector was hecause he called the police after the coat had been replaced in the car as requested. He also admitted making a statement that "next time it would be bullets, not fists." Medical evidence of Dr. H. M. Budd showed that Morrell had been rather seriously injured hy the blow and that if complication ensued his condition would be serious. Evidence Was also givcn by Sergeant Miller and also by Inspector Morrell* 'by a series of signs. and. the accused was sentexiced to two .months gaol on the first charge and commit- , ted to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentcnce on- the charge of violence.
