The opening of the Magistrate's Court at Opotiki on Wednesday when Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., presided for the first time, was preceded by a most pleasing, little ceremony. All the local members of the bar, the Justices of the Peace, the Mayor of Opotiki and the members of the police force assembled to welcome the new magistrate. Mr. Arrowsmith, on behalf of the bar, formally welcomed Mr. Platerson and recalled the fact that relations between the bench and bar in that court had always been miost happy. His Worship followed a gentleman who by his courtesy and knowledge .of the law, had endeared himself to both the bar and the publie. Mr. G. S. Moody (Mayor of Opotiki) also ex-tended a welcome on behalf of the people of (Opotiki. Mr. F. J. Short, J.P., spoke in a similar strain oh behalf of the Justices and Sergeant Miller for the police.
