MORE OPTIMISM
The acting-Prime Minister has again encouraged the country by an optimistic survey in _ the course of which he has predicted a recovery in prices and a restoration of reasonable prosperity. Mr. Coates quoted interesting figures to substantiate his contentions and while it is obvious that we are not yet by any means out of the wood, a further favourable 'reaction may be ; expected from the more confid- ; ent tone which is now being adopted by the country's leadeTs. ■ This reaction would be greatly i emphasised by successful nego- ' tiations on the part of Mr. j Forbes iri London to r-elieve .the I burden ,of' overseas indebtedness ; in this Dominion.) "Mr. ! Forbes, ■ in i this . TeSpect >mhy - tYelb takei> a ■ leaf from the:book of that ihde- ; f atigable' • negotiator, M. Litvinoff, Soviet Envoy to the World Conference. M. Litvinoff has made no pretences of parti-
u cipating in the higher flights of , debate in the conference •. but haS been industriously using the : opportunity to negotiate improved trade agreements for his country. We. cannot but admire M. Litvinoff 's singlenesis of purpose and his unashamed indifference to anything but the material gain of his country. It is not to be suggestedi that Mr. Forbes should adopt quite such typically Soviet methods but there is no doubt that the outside of the 'coiiference, he could do a great deal to assist recovery. To be quite frank, Mr. Forbes cannot do great i deal to influence the deliberations of the conference one! way or the other, but New Zealand will accouht his mission well spent if -he is able to n'egoti'ate!a re-adjustment of interest charges with overseas bondholders.
