Hastings, June 27. ■Strike conditiohs eontinue in Napi eland Hastings but it is possi'ble that a ■settlement bf the dispute may be ma'de at a mass meeting of the men to he held in Napier. At this meeting certadn proposals Will be put to the men which Mr. W. E. Barnard, M.P., and Mr. G. A. Madison (Mayor of Hastings) consider will prohahly prove acceptahle However, when interviewed, th'ei men's representative, Mr. H. Eay, declined to comment, stating that the whole matter had been handed over to the national executive of the New Zealand Union of Unemployed Workers. At a meeting held in Hastings tonight, Mr. Madison said that the cause of the strike h'ad been removed as a result of the deeision of the River B'oard not to use unemployed labour in connection with its preliminary diversion scheme. 'Mr. Barnard and the Napier cer.tifying ofiicer, Mr. Watt, are sanguine that the> proposals will prove acceptahle to the men and that they will return to work. Men Non-Commital Napier, June 27. Questioned as to the attitude of the Hawk'es Bay Council of the National Union of Unemployed Workers, Mr. H. Kay said tha't at a meeting of the council to-day it was deeided to place the Whole matter in the hands of the National Executive and that the issue had therefore hecome a i national one. He refhsed to commif himself as tothe possible attitude of the men to ward the proposals.
