Crawford had a gruelling match against the virile Spaniard, Maier, who is unsurpassed overh'ead and volleys splendidly. He began by twice acing Crawford, and led 4-1 in the first set, after which Crawford improvefi his length and won 7-5. Th'e tennis remained at a high level, and in the fifth set Maier led 4-2. Crawford, serving grimly, woii the next gaime, then withstood th'e Spariiard's fierce high-kicking Service and eventally won the set and the match.
