BIRTHDAY PARTY

W.W.I. FUNCTION The Woodlands Hall was crowded ■ on Friday afternoon when me.mbers from the Whakatane, Waiotahi, Waimana, Kutarere, Otara, Ruakokore, Paerata Bridge and Opotiki Women's Institutes met to celebrate the second birthday of the Woodlands branch. Mesdames J. Tabb and W. E. Sargent received the guests at the door. I Features of the afternoon were the artistic decorations and the. earefully arranged vases of roses, violets and poppies. The president's table was . decorated with fairy bells and violets. Mrs. J. Armstrong, president, opened the function by welcoming the guests, after which the National Anthem and the institute's song were sung. Two eompetitions were won by Miss I. Fraser, and Miss M. du Pontet, a glee, "Grandfather's Clock," was sung by Mesdames J. Armstrong, Fisher, Barbour, W. Pilkington, Hollard and Woodside and Miss D. Gulde; a pianoforte solo by Miss E. Fleming; recitation, "Applied Astronomy," with "Institute Day" as an encore, Mrs. Debreceny; whistling duet, Mesdames Dickinson and Pilkington (encored) ; solo "Just a Song at Twilight," Mrs. F. Harvey, accompanied by Mrs. Hambly (encored) ; recitation, "The Cowardj" Miss E. Armstrong, and finally community singing. Mrs. Upton was the winner of a basket in charge of Mrs. Orr, of .Whakatane, the proeeeds of which were for the Blind Institute. Mrs. Stewart, president of the Whakatane Institute, accompanied by Mrs. S. Miller and Mrs. Fogarty was present. The following speakers thanked the W.W.I. for the enjoyable. afternoon: Mrs. Cooper (Opotiki), Mrs. W. Jeffrey (Waiotahi), Mrs. Morrice (Otara), Mrs. C. Hill (Paerata Ridge) and hfrs. A. E. Martin (on behalf of the W.D.F.U. and the Rangers). A delieious afternoon tea was provided, a two-tiered birthday calce occupying the place of honour in the centre of the hall.
